SCOUTING REPORT

STRENGTHS: Very good size & strength...Powerful...Relentless & tough...Versatile...Violent hands...Leader

WEAKNESSES: Lacks elite quickness...Not a speed rusher...Won’t fit every scheme...Needs to shed blocks better

OVERALL: A three year starter, Tyson Jackson wasn’t highly recruited out of high school, redshirted in 2004 and saw limited action in 2005 as a freshman. He started as a sophomore in 2006 and earned Second Team All-SEC honors with 8.5 sacks. He struggled as a junior with declining stats and improved some as a senior, but neither season was close to his production as a sophomore. Jackson has excellent starting experience and has stayed relatively healthy over his career. He has excellent size with good strength and a powerful anchor. Jackson is a versatile talent who can move inside and play tackle in a 4-3 defense, but might be best suited as an end in a 3-4 defensive scheme to utilize his strengths. He has good burst off the snap, but isn’t an explosive speed rusher and won’t ever put up big sack numbers in the NFL. Jackson is very good against the run and will hold his own. He shows a relentless attitude and has a nonstop motor that coaches will love. Jackson is a smart player and is recognized as a team leader in the locker room. He shows violent hands and good pass rush moves to swim past weaker tackles. Jackson is a hard worker on and off the field and is always trying to get better. He needs to shed blocks quickly to close off the edge as an end against the run. Jackson understands leverage, but will sometimes get lazy and play without balance. He still has some untapped potential and NFL coaches might be able to get more out of him than what he showed in college.

BOTTOM LINE: Jackson’s skill set and talent shows that he is best suited as a run stopper than pass rusher and doesn’t get consistent pressure on the QB to be a top 15 pick– ideal as a DE in a 3-4 scheme.
