SCOUTING REPORT

STRENGTHS: Technician & shows excellent fundamentals...Nasty & physical...Nice awareness...Strong punch

WEAKNESSES: Lacks initial burst...Struggles on island...Minor character issue...Needs to sustain blocks longer

OVERALL: A three year starter, Canfield saw significant time as a freshman, including three starts. During his career, he made over 40 starts, most of them at right guard, but moved to left guard halfway through his junior season. Canfield has good durability, but was hindered by a knee strain in 2007. He plays with a nonstop motor, a great work ethic, and doesn’t stop until the whistle blows. Canfield carries a nasty demeanour and a mean streak as if he is playing with a chip on his shoulder. He is an average athlete who shows good side-to-side shuffle, but has suspect overall mobility and will have trouble blocking on an island. Canfield has excellent awareness and is a smart player who understands the nuances and responsibilities of his position. He lacks initial burst, but is strong at the POA and packs a powerful punch. Canfield has a strong anchor and possesses the strength to redirect defenders once engaged, however, he needs to sustain those blocks longer. He is a physical presence and always finishes aggressively. Canfield has strong hands and wrists and takes good angles in both pass protection and run blocking. He was charged with an assault charge in February of 2008 and was suspended indefinitely, but the charges were later dropped (ironically, he majored in Criminal Justice while at Cincinnati). Canfield was named to the All-Big East Second Team three consecutive years as a sophomore, junior, and senior.

BOTTOM LINE: A strong lineman known for his nasty mean streak on the field, Canfield won’t stand out for his agility, but he makes up for it with outstanding technique, aggressiveness, and awareness.
