SCOUTING REPORT

STRENGTHS: Nice athleticism & quickness...Excellent ballskills...Trusts his instincts...Very good experience

WEAKNESSES: Lacks strength & bulk...Not very physical or tough...Durability concerns...Streaky awareness

OVERALL: A four year starter, Mike Mickens made an instant impact as a true freshman as he won a starting position at corner and earned Second-Team Freshman All-America honors. He was Second-Team All-Big East as a freshman and sophomore and earned First-Team All-Big East honors as a junior and senior the past two seasons. Mickens has excellent experience with 47 starts under his belt over the past four years and finished his career with 14 interceptions and 45 passes defended. He has decent height, but has a slim frame and needs to get stronger to better match up in the physical NFL. Despite registering 71 tackles (second on the team) as a senior, Mickens doesn’t have much technique when tackling, but he also doesn’t avoid contact. He has decent awareness, but he trusts his instincts and plays with a high-level of confidence. Mickens keeps his head on a swivel and seems to always know where the ball is. He is a natural athlete with not great speed, but just enough to stick with players downfield. Mickens shows nice explosion off the ball and doesn’t bite easily. He isn’t very physical and will get out-muscled at the next level. Despite his outstanding experience, Mickens does have some durability concerns as he suffered a tough knee injury late in 2008 which caused him to miss the rest of the regular season, but he also worked hard to rehab and play in the Orange Bowl. However he did miss the Senior Bowl and won’t be 100% for his postseason workouts.

BOTTOM LINE: Mickens needs to answer questions about his knee and if he is physical enough to start in the pros, but shows the athleticism, confidence, and experience to find a spot in an NFL secondary.
