SCOUTING REPORT

STRENGTHS: Ideal size & measureables...Nice athleticism & quickness...Top ballskills...Smart & instinctive

WEAKNESSES: Needs to turn his head quicker...Only an average tackler...Sometimes too physical in coverage

OVERALL: A three year starter, Malcolm Jenkins won the Jim Thorpe Award as a senior given to the top defensive back in college football. He wasn’t highly recruited out of high school and actually came to Columbus to play wideout, but saw significant time as a freshman at nickelback. Jenkins looks the part with excellent height and a solid frame. He is a phenomenal athlete with great quickness and speed (won the state title in the 400-meter dash in high school). Jenkins is a very heady player and doesn’t rely simply on his athletic skill, but also on his natural instincts to make plays. He puts himself in good situations to make a play on the ball and will bait the quarterback. Jenkins has fluid hips, but he needs to do a better job of turning his head downfield to look for the ball. He isn’t a great tackler, but also doesn’t avoid contact and is willing to throw his body around. Jenkins was a standout on special teams this past year, blocking a field goal and a punt his senior season. He shows excellent anticipation and breaks extremely quick towards the play. Jenkins is a natural leader who will get his team fired up and is a fiery competitor. He is rarely intimidated and has great trust in his ability to play on an island. Jenkins’ backpedal is good, but certainly not great and he has room to improve in that area. He works best with the play in front of him which leads many to think that he is best suited to play safety in the NFL.

BOTTOM LINE: An emotional leader, Jenkins has several of the ideal intangibles that NFL teams seek in a starting CB including his uncanny ability to make plays on the ball - Top DB in the draft.
