SCOUTING REPORT
STRENGTHS: Looks the part with good size...Very strong arm...Poised & makes quick decisions...Very tough
WEAKNESSES: Suspect touch...Longer release...Questionable footwork...Lacks ideal experience & production
OVERALL: A former walk-on, Hunter Cantwell worked his way up to be the back up to Brian Brohm in just his freshman season. He appeared in three games in 2005 after Brohm hurt his leg and looked impressive, but fell to Virginia Tech in the bowl game despite throwing three touchdowns. Cantwell started another three games as a sophomore after Brohm suffered a thumb injury. After being using sparingly in 2007, he became the full-time starter as a senior this past year when Brohm was a second round pick to Green Bay. Cantwell recorded respectable stats in 2008 despite leading Louisville to a 5-7 record, including a 1-6 record in conference play, and missing a bowl game. He looks the part with tall, built frame and composure to be a classic drop back passer. Cantwell has a very strong arm and can make all the NFL throws. He isn’t overly athletic, but is a good passer on the move. Cantwell shows excellent poise in the pocket and rarely becomes scared or shaky from pressure. He makes quick decisions and shows decent field visions, but his delivery is somewhat elongated and needs to develop a quicker release. Cantwell has suspect footwork and needs to set his feet and throw as he throws off his back foot too often. He is a smart player is not afraid to throw it away. Cantwell’s accuracy is good, but there is much room to improve with streaky touch on his passes. He is one of the more underrated players in this draft class.
BOTTOM LINE: Despite a poor senior year and lack of ideal overall experience, Cantwell flashes the raw tools, arm strength and prototypical size to develop into a quality NFL quarterback.
