SCOUTING REPORT

STRENGTHS: Nice size & frame...Physical & strong...Tough to bring down...Very good hands...Good routes

WEAKNESSES: Lacks elite suddenness & speed...Doesn’t have explosive burst off the LOS...Gain separation?

OVERALL: A three year starter, Hakeem Nicks wasn’t a big-time recruit out of high school, but became a starter right away as a true freshman and set several school freshman records. He set a single-season school record with 74 receptions in 2007 and posted similar stats as a junior and earned All-ACC First Team honors. Nicks leaves North Carolina with 14 school records, including catches (181), receiving yards (2,580), and receiving scores (21). He is a good athlete, but isn’t a blazer and won’t impressive anyone with his suddenness and long speed. Nicks has good size and frame and has room to get a little stronger. He might be the most physical receiver in this draft and takes pride in his aggressive nature. Nicks shows big, reliable hands and very good focus and concentration. He makes acrobatic catches and shows good hands away from his body. Nicks is tough over the middle and works well in traffic. He lacks an elite burst off the LOS and might have trouble gaining separation from NFL defensive backs. Nicks is a willing blocker and does a nice job in that area. He is very good after the catch and is very tough to bring down as he will break through tackles. Nicks runs good routes and understands the nuances of the position. He has been banged up a few times over his career with ankle injuries, but durability doesn’t seem to be a major issue. Nicks has the big, physical playing style similar to Terrell Owens or Anquan Boldin, but needs to show he has enough speed for the NFL.

BOTTOM LINE: There is a lot to like about Nicks with his natural abilities, reliable hands, and ability to create downfield, but he doesn’t have elite speed and separation might be an issue in the NFL.
