SCOUTING REPORT
STRENGTHS: Strong & disruptive...Quick feet & active...Great motor & doesn’t stop...Good burst off the snap
WEAKNESSES: Inconsistent technique & leverage...Won’t fit in every system...Needs to improve his awareness
OVERALL: A three year starter, Evander “Ziggy” Hood was recruited as a defensive end and tight end out of high school and played on the defensive line as a true freshman in all 12 games. He became the starter in 2006 as a sophomore defensive tackle, but also broke his foot that year. Hood improved his numbers as a junior, but had his best season as a senior, earning First Team All-Big 12 honors with 62 tackles and five sacks. He has gained almost 50 pounds since his freshman season and keeps his weight in the 300 lbs area. Hood is a natural leader and is a heady football player. He worked well as a tackle in a 4-3 set, but might fit best as an end in a 3-4 defensive scheme. Hood is very active, disruptive, and plays with a nonstop motor. He shows nice burst off the snap and does a good job getting to the backfield and putting pressure on the quarterback. Hood needs to play with better technique, including overall balance and show better mechanics. He is an intelligent player, but needs to show better overall awareness. Hood is a good athlete and has very quick feet. He doesn’t stop and is extremely relentless until the play is dead. Hood does a good job fighting off blocks with his violent hands and is an excellent finisher. He is very forceful and makes his way into the backfield. Hood has the frame to get bigger and add bulk to his body. He has had a few minor injuries throughout his career, but durability isn’t an issue.
BOTTOM LINE: Ziggy is an extremely hard worker and has pushed his draft stock to the second round range with his disruptive and playing style and nonstop effort to collapse the pocket – 3-4 end maybe?
