SCOUTING REPORT

STRENGTHS: Smart leader...Ideal size...Confident & clutch...Good experience & production...Decent arm

WEAKNESSES: Streaky accuracy & touch...Inconsistent mechanics...Jumpy & easily rattled...Very unpolished

OVERALL: Owner of virtually every passing record at Buffalo, Drew Willy is one of the few four year starting quarterbacks in this draft. He started eight games in each of his first two seasons before starting 12 games as a junior and 14 contests this past season. Willy has a good, but not great arm as he lacks a true deep ball. At Buffalo, he played in a shotgun style offense and was asked to make plays outside the pocket and on the run. Willy is a good athlete with nice mobility, but is more of a pocket passer than a scrambler. He is a smart and confident player who believes in his abilities and wants the ball at the end of games. Willy has suspect poise as he is rattled easily and forces throws. He has poor mechanics and footwork and needs to learn how to set his feet and step up into the pocket. Willy’s accuracy is hot-and-cold as he shows excellent touch on one throw, but then erratic on the next attempt. However, he is very efficient and takes care of the football. As a senior, Willy recorded a TD/INT ratio of 25/6, a big improvement from the 27/24 TD/INT ratio he compiled over his first three seasons. He does an excellent job seeing the whole field and picking apart defences when given time. Willy shows very good touch on timing routes and plays over the middle. He is not ready for the next level and will have to sit and learn if he wishes to have any success in the NFL. Willy is an unpolished and developmental project with upside.

BOTTOM LINE: Willy is a classic drop back passer and four year starter, but did most of his damage in the MAC and still has room to improve his mechanics and footwork before he is NFL-ready.
