SCOUTING REPORT

STRENGTHS: Excellent receiver intangibles...Great hands...Nice height...Natural instincts...Tough competitor

WEAKNESSES: One-dimensional...Lacks elite bulk & strength...Poor blocking technique...Not a fit for everyone

OVERALL: A very productive player, Chase Coffman was a top recruit out of high school and put up great stats as a true freshman in 2005, garnering Freshman All-American honors. He had just seven starts his first three seasons at Missouri because he was stuck behind Martin Rucker, but became the go-to guy as a senior this past season. Coffman had by far his best season in 2008 with 90 catches (good for seventh in the Big 12), 987 yards, and 10 touchdowns. He was a Second Team All-Big 12 player as a senior, earning the John Mackey Award given to the top tight end in the nation. Coffman won’t fit in every NFL offensive scheme because he is a one-dimensional receiver who will struggle blocking. He has natural receiver intangibles and understands coverage. Coffman has soft hands and rarely drops the ball, making a lot of his catches away from the body and can make the acrobatic catch as well. He is a tough competitor and a hard worker who leaves everything on the field. Coffman does show some raw strength and can run over defensive backs, but needs to get stronger and have a thicker build to match up better with NFL linebackers. He isn’t a quick-twitch athlete, but has good foot quickness and has enough football speed to make plays downfield. Coffman was very productive in the Tigers’ pass-happy offensive system so his stats might be tad inflated. He is a willing blocker, but struggles to consistently show solid blocking technique and will struggle in that area at the next level.

BOTTOM LINE: Coffman was very productive at Mizzou and has natural WR intangibles to be a consistent target in the NFL, but his inconsistency blocking raises questions about him being a every-down player.
