SCOUTING REPORT
STRENGTHS: Unbelievable strength & power...Very active & relentless...Tough & aggressive...Very Physical
WEAKNESSES: Not overly explosive...Not much of a speed rusher...Inconsistent technique...Is he a DE or LB?
OVERALL: A two year starter, Brian Orakpo is a tough prospect to project because while he is extremely strong and powerful, he won’t be able to rely simply on being a bull-rusher at the next level and will need to develop more pass rush moves. He started a few games early in his career, but didn’t become a full-time starter until 2007 as a junior. Orakpo made the most out of his senior season as he collected 17.5 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks, winning the Bronko Nagurski Trophy (nation’s top defensive player) and the Ted Hendricks Award (nation’s top defensive end). He was also a consensus First-Team All American and was the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. Orakpo is very active and plays at a high level. He shows excellent power at the POA and uses his violent hands to slap away blockers’ attempts to hold him off. Orakpo is very physical and aggressive. He has a quick first step, but isn’t overly explosive off the snap and can be engulfed easily. Orakpo has decent size, but his game is based on his strength as he can bench 515 lbs. and squat 600 lbs. His NFL potential might be best suited standing up as a linebacker as he shows very good discipline to play in space. Orakpo is stout against the run and will hold his own. His technique is inconsistent and he needs to round-out his skill-set to be an effective starter in the pros. Orakpo has a future in the NFL because of his overall strength and physical-style of play, but he isn’t an elite prospect.
BOTTOM LINE: A workout warrior who transitions that strength to the field, Orakpo is a very powerful bull-rusher, but isn’t a speed rusher which could hurt his potential in the NFL – might move to OLB.
