SCOUTING REPORT
STRENGTHS: Natural athleticism & quickness...Ideal size & strength...Terrific blocker...Very physical
WEAKNESSES: Not a dynamic player...Unpolished route runner...Strong character & durability concerns
OVERALL: A four year starter, Brandon Pettigrew looks the part and has all the intangibles of a starting NFL tight end. He never put up gaudy numbers which might be a red flag for some teams because of the pass-happy offense that Oklahoma State uses. Pettigrew missed some time in 2008 because of injuries and didn’t score a touchdown. He did record 112 catches during his collegiate career, but just nine scores. Pettigrew displays outstanding strength and power at the POA and might be the best blocker in this below average class of tight ends. He is a natural athlete who will be able to make plays after the catch, but isn’t a dynamic threat (i.e. Kellen Winslow Jr.). Pettigrew shows natural instincts as a receiver and a blocker and is very good at both. He has big, strong hands and doesn’t drop a lot of catchable balls. Pettigrew is strong in the open field and will break tackles and pick up extra yardage. He is very physical and aggressive when blocking and take pride in that aspect of his game although usually unpopular among tight ends. Pettigrew missed time this past year due to ankle and leg injuries so durability is a concern. Character is also a red flag as he was arrested January 20, 2008 for assault and battery on a police officer and public intoxication. Pettigrew allegedly elbowed a police offer and failed to disperse during an altercation at party, but the charges were reduced and he was put on probation for a year.
BOTTOM LINE: Despite character and durability concerns, Pettigrew is the best TE prospect in this draft because of his natural tools and athleticism to be a very good receiver and blocker in the NFL.
