SCOUTING REPORT

STRENGTHS: Explosive athleticism...Elite instincts & awareness...Top ballskills & motor...Tough & physical

WEAKNESSES: Lacks ideal NFL height & measureables...Average tackler...Easily engulfed by bigger blockers

OVERALL: A four year starter, Alphonso Smith made a big splash as a redshirt freshman, earning All-freshman honors by several publications and never looked back. He set an ACC-record recording 21 interceptions over his career at Wake Forest. Smith is an explosive athlete who was a talented basketball player and also starred at quarterback in high school. He doesn’t look the part of a first round-calibur cornerback with his small height and slim figure, but he makes up for it with his competitiveness and plays with a chip on his shoulder. Smith has outstanding instincts, awareness, and sniffs out the play, most times baiting the quarterback into a poor throw. He has the best ballskills in this draft among cornerbacks and seems to always get his hands on the ball. Smith has lightning quickness and breaks to the ball with great explosiveness. He has fluid hips and is smooth in his backpedal. Smith is very physical, but his lack of size will have him outmatched sometimes with bigger receivers and is easily shielded from the ball. He isn’t a great tackler, but is willing and won’t avoid contact. Smith plays with outstanding passion and is extremely confident in his abilities despite his lack of size. He will also contribute very well on special teams as a return man. Smith is easily engulfed by blockers and taken out of the play. He might not have the size that has scouts drooling, but he does have the athleticism, ballskills, and confidence to start at the NFL level.

BOTTOM LINE: A productive player in college, Smith lacks ideal measureables, but makes up for it with his instincts, quickness, and plays much bigger than he is - will contribute immediately in the NFL.
